The Rob Roy Way

Rob Roy Way Map

Our Recommended Route :

Day 1
Arrive in Drymen
Travel to Drymen for your first night's accommodation.
Day 2

Drymen to Aberfoyle

(10 miles / 16 km)

Starting from the picturesque village of Drymen located close to the shores of Loch Lomond, The Rob Roy Way follows minor roads and forest tracks through Loch Ard Forest to the small town of Aberfoyle, the most southerly of the Trossachs villages. From time to time you will glimpse the peak of Ben Lomond far ahead to the north-west and this relatively easy walking is generally spent on forest tracks.
Day 3

Aberfoyle to Callander

(10 miles / 16 km)

Leaving Aberfoyle behind your route will continue to take you on forest tracks through the Menteith Hills to Callander, descending to Loch Venachar along the way and providing wonderful views to the north. Callander is the second largest town on the Rob Roy Way and you may wish to pay a visit to the Rob Roy Visitor Centre situated in the town centre. This again is a fairly easy day with a maximum ascent of 220m.
Day 4

Callander to Strathyre

(9 miles / 14 km)

From Callander, the Way continues its journey by the banks of the River Teith and gently climbs through the Pass of Leny to Loch Lubnaig and into the Highlands. The track follows the western shore of Loch Lubnaig to the small highland village of Strathyre. This is an easy section shared with a cycle route following an old railway line.

Day 5

Strathyre to Killin

(12 miles / 19 km)

The Way continues north and climbs gradually uphill, providing some excellent views across the valley to Ben Sheann, before a steeper descent into the village of Kingshouse. From here it is a 2 mile side trip to Balquidder and a must for anybody who wishes to see where Rob Roy lived and is buried. The route now continues along the old railway line and climbs through a series of hairpin bends above the attractive lochside village of Lochearnhead. The route veers westward and enters Glen Ogle and descends into Killin past the Falls of Dochart.
Day 6

Killin to Ardtalnaig

(12 miles / 19 km)

This is a splendid cross-country section which begins by following a forest track up into the mountains to the south of Loch Tay. You should have some fine views of the surrounding hills, including the twin mountain peaks of Ben More and Stob Binnain some 10 miles away and often snow-capped until late summer. Descend into the tiny village of Ardeonaig and follow the quiet tarmac road along the south-side of Loch Tay to Ardtalnaig for 3 miles. You will have had a long steady ascent to 575m today followed by a long descent to Ardeonaig. As there is no accommodation in Ardtalnaig you will be transported back to Killin for a second overnight stay and returned to Ardtalnaig to contine your walk the next day.
Day 7

Ardtalnaig to Aberfeldy

(15 miles / 24 km)

After being transferred back to Ardtalnaig by your hospitable hosts in Killin, the Way continues along the southern shores of Loch Tay past the small hamlet of Acharn. You may wish to pay a visit to the Scottish Crannog Centre or the pretty village of Kenmore situated at the east end of Loch Tay, 1 mile further on. The route now climbs and continues along forest tracks before descending past the spectacular Falls of Moness and the Birks of Aberfeldy to the attractive little town of Aberfeldy. This is a strenuous day but with rewarding views of Ben Lawers and Schiehallion and could be split into two days by overnighting in Kenmore.

Day 8

Aberfeldy to Pitlochry

(11 miles / 18 km)

On the final leg of your journey the Rob Roy Way crosses Wade's Bridge and then heads downstream beside the River Tay to the village of Strathtay. It is then a very easy walk over hills and open moorland, where the tracks and forest paths lead past the Neolithic Stone Circle of Clachan an Diridh and down to cross the River Tummell and to the end of the Rob Roy Way in Pitlochry. This is an attractive, bustling tourist town situated in a beautiful location on the River Tummell, surrounded by mountains. It is well worth spending at least an extra day here to enjoy the host of attractions of this charming Highland town.
